The Number Line

Number line

A number line is an image of a graduated straight and horizontal line wherein numbers are composed. A number composed on the left-hand side of the number line is lesser and number composed on the right-hand side of the number line is greater.

Operations on a number line

⇒ Addition – Example, 2 + 6 = 8 -First, locate 2  on the number line. Then moving 6  places to the right will give 8 .

⇒ Subtraction – Example, 6 - 2 = 4 -First, locate 6  on the number line. Then moving 2  places to the left will give 4 .

⇒ Multiplication- Example, 2 \times 4 = 8 -Start from 0  and skip 2  places to the right 4  times.

Division – Example, 4 \div 2 = 2 – Start from 4  and subtract 2  for a number of times till 0  is reached. The number of times 2  is subtracted gives the quotient.
