What is Fraction?

A fraction is a number representing a part of whole. The whole may be a single object or a group of objects. The other way round, we can say that a fraction is an operation on a number.

A fraction: – Fraction means a part of a group or of a region. But all parts of the group must be equal.

  1. The first one is the whole that is, a complete circle.
  2. In the second circle, if we divide the circle into two equal parts then the shaded portion is the half that is,  \dfrac{1}{2} of the circle.
  3. In the third circle, if we divide the circle into four equal parts and shade only one part then the shaded part is the one fourth that is \dfrac{1}{4} of the whole circle.
  4. In the fourth circle, if we divide the circle into four parts and shade the three parts then the shaded part is the three fourth that is \dfrac{3}{4} of the whole circle.

Numerator and Denominator

\[\dfrac{3}{4}\]is a fraction. We can read it as “Three-fourths”. Here, 4 stands for the number of equal parts into which the whole has been divided and 3 stands for the equal parts which has been taken out. It is to be noted that while expressing a situation of counting parts to write a fraction, all parts must be equal. Here, 3 is called the numerator and 4 is called the denominator. Numerator and denominator can be identified for any fraction.
