Adding or Subtracting like fractions

Addition of two or more like fractions can be carried out as follows:

Step 1. Add the numerators.

Step 2. Retain the denominator

Step 3. Write the fraction as: Result of Step 1 / Result of Step 2.

For example: \dfrac{1}{5} + \dfrac{3}{5} = \dfrac{{1 + 3}}{5} = \dfrac{4}{5}

Subtraction of two fractions can be carried out as follows:

Step 1. Subtract the smaller numerator from the bigger numerator.

Step 2. Retain the denominator.

Step 3. Write the fraction as: Result of Step 1 / Result of Step 2.

For example: \dfrac{7}{{10}} - \dfrac{6}{{10}} = \dfrac{{7 - 6}}{{10}} = \dfrac{1}{{10}}.
